Before you rent
Shop rent or getting online first?
Most people starting a business in Zimbabwe begin by looking for premises. It feels like the real step, the one that makes the business official. But rent is a fixed cost that arrives every month whether customers do or not.
This guide is not an argument against shops. It is a way of asking a better question: do you need the shop before you have proved people want what you are selling?
Start building for freeWhat a shop actually commits you to
A lease is a promise to pay for months ahead. Around it sit other costs that arrive with it, not instead of it.
- Deposit and the first month's rent up front
- Electricity, water and any connection deposits
- Shelving, counters, furniture and signage
- Security, whether a guard, bars or an alarm
- Stock sitting on the shelf before anyone buys it
- Your own time, tied to opening hours
What starting online commits you to
Starting online is a smaller set of costs, and most of them are one-off or monthly amounts you can stop.
- A website: free to design with MatSiteBuilder, $15 a year for the domain and $10 a month for hosting
- WhatsApp Business, which is free
- Decent photographs of your work or products
- A way to deliver or let people collect
- Money for marketing, which you now actually have
The comparison that matters
Do not compare rent against a website. Compare the whole shop package against the whole online package, and then ask what each one buys you.
A shop buys you passing trade and somewhere for customers to walk into. Online buys you reach beyond your street, and the freedom to find out what sells before you commit.
Neither one creates customers on its own. Both need you to tell people you exist.
When the shop is the right first move
- Your trade depends on walk-in traffic, like a tuckshop or takeaway
- You need a space customers must physically come to, like a salon chair or workshop
- You already have steady, proven demand and the margins to carry the rent
Common mistakes
- Signing a lease before testing whether anyone will buy
- Budgeting only for rent and forgetting deposits, fittings and stock
- Spending everything on the premises and nothing on letting people know you are open
- Assuming a quiet shop will fill up on its own with time
