Turn visitors into chats
How to add WhatsApp to your website
A website that only shows a phone number leaves out the channel most Zimbabwean customers actually prefer. Adding a WhatsApp button means someone reading about your services can start ordering without leaving the page.
This guide covers adding the button yourself, and the easier route if your website is built with MatSiteBuilder.
Start building for freeThe basic idea
A WhatsApp button on a website is really just your wa.me link attached to a button or floating icon. When clicked on a phone it opens WhatsApp directly; on a computer it usually opens WhatsApp Web so the person can still message from their browser.
Building the link first
Before adding anything to the site, make sure your link is correct: wa.me/ followed by 263 and your number without the leading zero, for example wa.me/263771234567. Test it on your own phone first.
If you are coding your own website
Add a normal link or image with the href set to your wa.me address, and open it in a new tab. Many site builders also let you paste this link into a floating button that stays visible as visitors scroll, which converts better than a link buried in the footer.
If your website is built with MatSiteBuilder
MatSiteBuilder adds a WhatsApp button to your site automatically as part of the build, wired to the number you give it. There is nothing to code and no plugin to install — the button appears on every page and opens a chat with your business straight away.
Placing it where it gets used
- A floating button in the corner, visible on every page, works best
- Next to each product or service, not only on the contact page
- At the end of a price list, where the decision to enquire is made
Adding a prefilled message per page
Different pages can carry different prefilled messages, so a click from your Services page can open with "Hi, I'd like to ask about your services" while a click from a specific product page names that product. This tells you exactly what someone was looking at before they messaged.
Test it properly
Click the button on a phone using mobile data, and again on a computer, before telling anyone the site is ready. A broken WhatsApp button is worse than none, because visitors assume you ignored them.
Next step
A working WhatsApp button is what turns a website visit into an actual order.
